Originality? Me'h? Seriously, the more I hear people talk about originality, the more I wonder why all of those 'unique' or 'twist' settings from 3rd party publishers tend to fall head first into the gutter despite their great hooks. Originality is highly overrated.

While I do love novelty, the most important thing is for a work to be interesting and usable and compelling. Something can be utterly derivative so long as it's done well enough that the quality of it will make it feel fresh again. Combining novelty and quality is absolutely splendid, but novelty shouldn't come first.
