A New Digital Direction for Wizards?

When Chris Cocks, the recently-named CEO of Wizards of the Coast, took on his new position we speculated how his digital gaming background, strongly grounded in Magic: The Gathering, might influence the company's vision. Thanks to a letter he released in January, we have a bit more insight into how he plans to translate his vision into reality. Virtual Magic Cocks mentioned Magic: The...

Sean's Picks of the Week (0213-0217) - Traveller, Shaintar, Pathfinder, Numenera, and Magnum Fury!

As you're reading this, I am once again embroiled in the chaos of gaming and schmoozery that is the American gaming convention. In this particular case, it's the much-beloved Genghis Con here in the Denver, CO area. While there's every kind of gaming you can imaging, the Rocky Mountain Savages ensure this is assuredly Savage Worlds territory - and the presence of Shane Hensley, Ed Wetterman, Ross Watson, Carinn Seabolt, Bill "Teh Ebil Bunneh" Keyes, Darrell Hardy, Norm "No Relation" Hensley, and Yours Truly doesn't hurt that idea much. If you ever get a chance to get there, it's well worth it (and a lot less stressful than trying to get a room at Gen Con).

RPG Crowdfunding News 038: Gods & Goddesses, Cthulhu Invictus, The Claws of Madness, Rotted Capes Su

Welcome back to our weekly look at tabletop roleplaying game, and accessories, crowdfunding roundup! Each week we’ll be looking at a few campaigns currently running that have caught our eye as well as occasionally speaking to some of the creators about their campaigns, or looking at some of the ‘behind the scenes’ business aspects of putting together, launching, operating and then delivering a crowdfunded project. If you have anything you’d like us to cover, or questions about anything we talk about, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or contact me directly.
WotC has just posted another "Plane Shift" document, detailing a world from Magic: the Gathering as a D&D setting. The 33-page PDF contains new races, monsters and more. "If the optimism, innovation, and spirit of creativity pervading the world of Kaladesh kindled your drive for adventure, we have what you're looking for. If The Art of Magic: The Gathering—Kaladesh made you long to experience the aether-swept landscapes and brilliant inventions of Magic's latest plane for yourself, these pages have what you need. Like a renegade inventor tinkering in a secluded workshop, author James Wyatt has crafted a set of rules to bring your Dungeons & Dragonsadventures to life on Kaladesh, including new races, new monsters, and a distinctly aether-flavored take on crafting the marvelous and ingenious magic items that define this plane."

Loren Wiseman RIP

Family and industry friends are reporting that seminal game designer Loren Wiseman has passed away. The exact cause of death is not yet known, but he has had long term health issues.
This year, EN Publishing will be launching the official Judge Dredd & The Worlds of 2000 AD Tabletop Adventure Game! Starting with a full-colour hardcover core rulebook, the many worlds of 2000 AD will be explored - starting, of course, with the most famous character from the pages of the iconic comic book, Judge Dredd! Work is already underway on the game, which will be powered by the WOIN (What's OLD is NEW) rules engine. 2000 AD is Britain's longest running and most celebrated anthology comic, known for its cocktail of explosive sci-fi and fantasy and its mean streak of irony and black humour covering genres such as future war (Rogue Trooper; The A.B.C. Warriors), action/adventure (Judge Dredd; Strontium Dog), fantasy (Sláine; Nemesis the Warlock), steampunk (Stickleback; Brass Sun), horror (Fiends of the Eastern Front; Absalom), and humour (DR & Quinch; Zombo).

Looking At The Abstract Of Game Design

Game design is a bit like being a shark in that it has to keep moving, or it will die. Of course there are always exceptions, because some sharks have adapted to be able to keep breathing without having to move. This can have its advantages, but sooner or later you've reached a point where you stop moving. Then you become dead in the water. This week's essay was sparked by my watching a...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Wizards & Warlocks -- Hexblades, Raven Queens, and Lore Mastery!

Master of Hexes Starting at 14th level, you can use your Hexblade’s Curse again without resting, but when you apply it to a new target, the curse immediately ends on the previous target. Does this mean you can cast it one more time, or over and over again? And does the 1 minute duration reset upon a new target, or does it continue from the previous target?

What D&D Monster Lurks in Stranger Things 2?

We previously covered at length the connections to Dungeons & Dragons in the first season of Netflix hit Stranger Things, and now the rumor mill is buzzing with a new monster in the trailer. Here’s what we know so far.

Elite: Dangerous Tabletop Kickstarter Hits Snag

The Kickstarter for the Elite: Dangerous tabletop role-playing game has hit a legal snag. Based on elements from the 1984 computer game Elite, and the sequels Frontier: Elite II and Frontier: First Encounters published by the video game publisher Frontier Development, the Elite: Dangerous tabletop game's website says: Elite: Dangerous is the modern day incarnation of the seminal space trading game Elite. 30 years after the original game reinvented the way people experienced playing computer games, Elite: Dangerous Role Playing Game seeks to immerse the role player in the same cut throat galaxy experience by online players.

Welcome back to a ‘Maps’ special edition of RPG Crowdfunding News! Here we take a look at four campaigns currently live on Kickstarter that are looking to cover our tabletops with pretty images.

Sean's Picks of the Week (0206-0210): Conan, Middle-Earth, Coriolis, Starjammer, and Kobolds!

Sorry for the delay, friends - I was involved in a huge charity gaming event this weekend, which took up quite a bit of my time and head pace. Here we are, though, with some nice Sunday morning reading for you. It's a nice spread between science-fiction and fantasy (with one Pick solidly mixing the two). Definitely a week for fans of 5e, Pathfinder, and games by Modiphius.
