The Kickstarters, GameOnTabletop, and IndieGoGo RPG crowdfunding campaigns that are covered here end on or before July 23rd. A TORG Eternity sourcebook, a Paranoia expansion, a bundle of GURPS PDFs, a comic publisher tests out an RPG anthology, and a third party D&D starter set are just some of the offerings worth checking out this week.
Adventurers walking from one location to another with gear on their backs face several challenges. Whether backpacking in Traveller or Call of Cthulhu or journeying in Dungeons & Dragons or Ryuutama, here are d30 mishaps an explorer might encounter on the trail.
If you need to while away some hours, here are five free (during spring 2020), plus two more under $10, solitaire RPG adventures to try. Rules used include Call of Cthulhu, The Dark Eye, and Tunnels & Trolls. Hopefully these solo RPG adventures get you through any slow days you may have.
Never Going Home, the weird World War One RPG, was one of the more talked about indie RPGs at Gen Con 2019. Because of that spotlight, I did an interview/review of the core rulebook with Brandon K. Aten, Matthew Orr, and artist, Charles Ferguson-Avery, at d20 Radio. Since I enjoyed talking to them, and I’m attending MomoCon 2020 with Brandon, another interview with him and Matthew Orr about...
The Call of Cthulhu Starter Set suggests learning the game by playing a solo adventure, then playing with just one player, and then playing with a full group. If you want to give Call of Cthulhu (CoC) a try but don’t want to spend a lot of money to start, consider trying the starter set.
A crop of novels are coming to your gaming table: Altered Carbon, Broken Earth, Dune, The Witcher, and more. For their part, Chaosium joins the party with an amazing entry, Rivers of London. Between that and Jonstown Compendium, their community content program for RuneQuest and Greg Stafford’s Glorantha, Chaosium continues to demonstrate why they dominate at the ENnie Awards. After returning...
As 2019 wraps up, Christmas may bring you new RPGs which encourage you to consider starting a new campaign in 2020 Even if you have an ongoing campaign, you might want to think ahead if you need to save the funds for a future campaign you want to run. Here are several RPGs and associated campaigns for you to consider.
This week I share RPG crowdfunding campaigns that end between November 15th to the 21st. Among these 17 campaigns is the fourth member of the million-dollar RPG crowdfunding campaign. What’s that? It’s a tabletop RPG crowdfunding project that reaches a million dollars like Matt Colville’s Strongholds & Streaming, John Wick’s (now Chaosium’s) 7th Sea: Second Edition, and Hit Point Press’...
Halloween is a great opportunity to try horror gaming in a one-shot maybe as a break from an ongoing campaign. If your players are used to fantasy then a detour into a Halloween adventure can be a great change of pace. Here are three RPGs that work well as one-shot Halloween adventures as well as another upcoming RPG to consider and one honorable mention.
I mentioned in the previous column how I sprung a horror game on players who didn't buy into it. But along with that change I introduced several mechanics to reinforce the horror, notably Dread's mechanic using Jenga tiles. After a few sessions, we gave up on it. Here's why.
Years ago I ran a game of D20 Modern using D20 Call of Cthulhu/D20 Delta Green over three years that culminated in the characters facing down the apocalypse. I thought the campaign was successful...until I polled my players and realized they weren't happy with it. Here's what I learned.
Shane Ivey agreed to discuss all things Arc Dream Publishing with me including Delta Green and his Swords & Sorceries D&D 5E adventures inspired by ancient myth.
There are at least 23 RPG and RPG-related Kickstarters ending between October 11th and the 17th (with some leftover projects that end on the 10th that I missed last week). Of those, I link many and share a quick preview of eight RPG Kickstarters and one action figure Kickstarter that has a resemblance to Pathfinder’s mascots.
Between September 20th to 26th, ten RPG, and RPG-related, Kickstarters end. Compared to recent weeks, that’s a notable decrease. However, this is not the start of a trend. Instead, it’s the result of Gen Con week and its impact on RPG Kickstarter launches (when many of the crowdfundings that would have ended this week likely would have begun).
Every April I shed my freelancer disguise for the clothes of a Track Director at what is one of Atlanta’s best conventions, JordanCon. To be honest it's the same black tee shirt and jeans, I just put them in a suitcase and pop on down to the Crowne Plaza® Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia. Along with the tools to bring the beauty of Science Fiction to what is primarily a Fantasy-focused membership...
The most widespread (by far) RPG has been Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), though in quite different forms. And Dungeons & Dragons tends to be dominated by magic users, or more broadly, spell casters. Why is that?

With The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977, Wizards is going back to the roots of the game, presenting material other histories have not.
Put the players within spitting distance of the fall of House Atreides and the rise of Muad’Dib.
For its first book of D&D's 50th anniversary year, Wizards is going big with a multiverse-spanning, multiverse-threatening adventure where players will face off against one of the game’s most legendary villains.
A great monster book on its own but also useful as a supplemental guide to pre-existing fantasy worlds.
