This week, I look at RPG crowdfunding projects and quickstarters that end between April 8th and 29th. These projects include some epic 5e offerings, options for Call of Cthulhu, Storypath, Powered by the Apocalypse, and more. In addition, I write about a few RPG adjacent projects at the end.
Monsters and pawns for D&D. Reprints of adventures for 80s Man, Myth and Magic and 70s D&D, a holiday adventure book for Call of Cthulhu, vampire myths and faith, and more dice. Rounded out with containers to hide behind when being hunted by Xenos or Aslan.
Playing with seven players at once has taught me that dice towers are a must, especially when playing with kids. I've run a Call of Cthulhu/D20 Modern game in the past, and this dice tower seemed perfect for that game, but it's actually a better fit for Dungeons & Dragons.
A monster manual for Call of Cthulhu always struck me as an odd proposition. It is not a game of heroic combat. It’s a game where players flee the monster until they can attack on their own terms, if at all. The game operates on a sense of mystery and the unknown. Players who can quote Deep One game statistics chapter and verse run the risk of deflating the atmosphere. The most recent release...
This week there is a new referee screen for Old-School Essentials and a horror module for Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. Chaosium has a two book set of monsters and gods along with a deck of cards for the monsters. Launch into space with new material for Traveller and an adventure for Coriolis. Put up a screen for your Warhammer Soulbound game, explore ancient and magical Egypt, or roleplay as a...
Lots of new adventures are available this week. Three adventures each statted out for D&D, Pathfinder, and Swords & Wizardry. Another adventure for Unknown Armies. A one shot horror adventure and three adventures featuring the Cthulhu Mythos. Moving on past adventures is a card driven box set of adventures in a neo-futuristic world. All rounded out with NPC and animal cards for any fantasy RPG.
Are you hungry or thirsty? An official (!) D&D cookbook, fantasy cocktail guide, and Mythos cookbook await you. Also this week: adventures for D&D, Spire, and Through the Breach. A book of random fantasy tables and workbook for enhancing PC backgrounds. Even a mug for Castles & Crusades to hold your cocktails.
What are Monte Cook Games, Chaosium, Evil Hat, Pelgrane, Atlas Games, and Arc Dream doing for New Gamemaster Month? I asked each of the companies how they’re supporting new GMs in the first major RPG “event” of 2021.
2020 continues to be challenging. And I don’t see going back to face to face gaming for a while yet. Though I miss gaming around a table rather than via pixels, I have found some unexpected joys in online gaming. Even with the ongoing troubles of the world.
Ben Aaronovitch, author of the Rivers of London novels and graphic novels, kindly agreed to talk to me about his magical world and the upcoming RPG by Chaosium set in his world. Ben smiled, joked, and laughed throughout the interview and shared his joy of fiction and geeky things as if we were old friends. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing his thoughts and anecdotes and could only distill a small...
We've all been there: as kids, we started a Dungeons & Dragons campaign but never imagined, decades later, that we'd still be playing in a world we made up. Does it ever end? Should it?
Halloween is a great time to try Call of Cthulhu and run a horror one shot. Call of Cthulhu offers a deep delve into a fictional setting of ancient gods and horrific monsters all linked through ancient tomes and cults throughout the time of man as well as before and after humans walk the Earth. The more you play Call of Cthulhu, the more you immerse yourself in this primordial and eldritch...
A two-shot of adventures to run this Halloween or anytime of the year: Kali Ghati and Lover in the Ice. Line up a haunting and finish off with some terrifying body horror running Delta Green. Both of these scenarios involve horrifying monsters of vastly different intent and presentation. Spoilers follow.
These new RPG products are available in print in October 2020. Ask your favorite local game store to order a copy or order online. The Call of Cthulhu and the Delta Green adventures are perfect for Halloween and the Alien RPG Starter Set can kick off an entire campaign of terror. This week all of the offerings except Alien (but as a franchise also goes back a long way) are from RPGs with long...
Gamebooks provide a branching-path framework for a single player to determine their fate, with more advanced gamebooks using dice to resolve conflicts. But what happens when the choices you make are determining not just what but how the adventure takes place?
I spoke with Jason Durall about Chaosium’s upcoming Lords of the Middle Sea Roleplaying Game for Basic Roleplaying. Based on Chaosium’s second board game of the same name, published in 1978, the setting is a post-apocalyptic ruined and flooded North America in 2401.

With The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977, Wizards is going back to the roots of the game, presenting material other histories have not.
Put the players within spitting distance of the fall of House Atreides and the rise of Muad’Dib.
For its first book of D&D's 50th anniversary year, Wizards is going big with a multiverse-spanning, multiverse-threatening adventure where players will face off against one of the game’s most legendary villains.
A great monster book on its own but also useful as a supplemental guide to pre-existing fantasy worlds.
