My 'fix' would be to make the shield bonus apply only against the triggering attack, with the option to upcast one level to have it last until the end of the turn it activates, and to upcast it two levels to have it last until the end of your next turn.

You're probably right that there weren't any really iconic additions to the monster list in 3e, but there are a ton of awesome monsters worth having on your random encounter charts. IMHO. Dude, 3e has so many monsters that aren't in 1e! I am a huge monster guy and although I converted a buttload of monsters to 3e, I never did encounter charts using them all- I did do a few of the 1d12 + 1d8 style ones from the MM2 for specific areas of my campaign, but not general ones.

Two things to start with. First, return to a d4 Hit Die. Second, allow a readied action to interrupt a spell being cast, given a failed Concentration check.

I love them! Given that I use the 2014 versions of the Conjure X spells, minimals make cool interesting random summons from Conjure Animals, and that in turn allows the party druids to wild shape into a new form. But to each their own.
