The two inevitables do force damage though with their unerring blades and slams.
I meant in general .... demons, angels, devils....all these high level creatures w/o magic weapons (even though the planes are littered with them).....go thru the monster books, almost no high level creature has a magic weapon...

I do not like the way it just deals 24 force damage and doesn't list the dice eg, 6d8 force damage. I was also wondering why robots needed the high-heal boots, but see it has a speed of 50 so they must be cool pneumatics or something.
It's an inevitable, a automaton of pure law. It's not going to do random dice rolls; it's going to do an exact, non-random amount of damage.

Exemplars of Law have less random aspects to them. Its a metagame aesthetics thing. :)

It also means their turns will run super fast at the table, particularly compared to lots of CR 20+ things. High speed precision robots!

I guess I do not picture anything being able to swing a force sword and cut only so deep to only deal a fixed amount of damage. The robot somehow know how the PC being hit is going to react to the swing coming at him as he tries to move and defend to be able to AI all the variables in that moment and deal the same amount.

I can see the logic since it is a robot. Not the reason though that my group will never run into one. Some things just get too fantastic.

I still find it really odd that these high level creatures don't do magic damage.....which is why the wars will never end, they just can't kill each other.
The "magic damage" that they indeed DO is represented by Force Damage.

Force Damage in 5E is recognized as being the raw matter of Magic when it's not condensed/molded into a spell or altered in some way to make it elemental.

It's why the Magic Weapon trait no longer exists on stat blocks. Force Damage is assumed to be automatically magical in that regard, making a weapon magical.

See my later reply....I'm talking all the high level CR monsters....

I don't think it should be creature dependent. It is about creating a design ethos that keep combat fun and dynamic. I do a fair bit of freelancing in this area (monster design, I mean) and essentially everyone but WotC and OSR are making an effort here.

I do like that the Time Dragon traded legendary actions for more and interesting reactions.
I suspect WotC is specifically avoiding giving monsters many off-turn options. That’s one of the things that gets blamed for the length of combat in 4e.
