In the Vampire 5th edition rule book, the GM is encouraged to avoid having the players make rolls unless failure or success will result in something interesting happening. i.e. Does it have some impact on the story? I really had to work hard to break myself of the habit of having the players roll for things that were ultimately inconsequential. I had a scene where a bunch of humans in San Francisco were psychically linked and a few hundred people woke up in the middle of the night, gathered on the street, and began singing "Boris the Spider" by the Who. One of the players wanted to identify the song and I had them make a roll. Why? Nothing consequential was going to happen if they failed and giving them the information made things more interesting not less. V5E isn't a game where failing automatically makes things worse, but it is a game where failure might result in some pretty terrible outcomes even for more mundane activities. So you're encouraged to avoid rolling for what are ultimately inconsequential acts. Should I have the vamprie roll intimidation or persuasion to get into the club? No, just let the character be menacing or suave. So where failures automatically equal a setback, you should absolutely limit rolls. Incidentally, I saw Candela Obscura at my local game shop today and noted it was only $40. I was tempted to pick it up, but decided I was unlikely to play it any time soon. I'm just now starting to play games I bought around 2020 during the pandemic.
