PCGen's Everlasting Bugs (and some suggestions)

There are some things that just never change... And that are very, very minor and easily corrected. I mean problems in .lst files.

Among others, the NONE/None bugs in the Magic of Faerûn prestige class. I remember having reported it. Resolving the bug is as simple as performing a Research/Replace, a simplissimo task with any editor, from edit to wordpad to ultraedit to vi.

Another is the psion's "d" powers, who are also bogus, because they are counted twice (both in the classes.lst file and in the specialist.slt file). Resolving the problem is as simple as editing the specialist.lst file to replace the 1s by 0s.

And yet another is made by these bloody Perform subskills. THERE IS ONE AND ONLY ONE PERFORM SKILL.

One perform skill to perform them all and on the character sheet write them.

So, why are Perform (Dance) and Perform (Lyre) continually springing up from nowhere ? In Magic of Faerûn, also.

Why not making for Perform the same thing as for Speak Language ? I.e., each rank would give another perform category (dance, juggle, harp, flute...).

I have attached a small zip file containing the various .lst files I use to overwrite their equivalents. The psionics handbook class.lst file contains the prestige class variants from Bruce Cordell (found on Monte Cook's site), unanymously far better than those in the book, but all other files contains only correction of bugs in MaoF and the PsiHB.

Someone with CVS access to PCGen should commit them to their proper directories.

Hello Gez,

The Lst files have been over hauled many times but the organization wasn't always there to not lose changes as various people did minor fixes and cheched in a new fix of an old file over the newer file. This has been talked about and that is why a different site just for handleing the Lst files was made.

So on the Yahoo site please restate your bug reports if you didn't fill out a bug report at sourceforge.

The reason the Perform skill is being split up is because of prestige Classes.

Why you may ask?

I'll tell you from what I know.

Prestige classes have been released with requirments of Perform (lyre) 5 & Perform (dance) 5. for the same prestige class. This started a debate at the pcgen site as to the best way to deal with it. After much concideration and some questions to the sage they went with what you see now. If you don't like the way it is start a descussion on the Yahoo site and state your reasons.

I hope some of this helped in explaining better. If it did not please discuss it on the yahoo site to get more of peoples views

The problem with perform is that you need to cheat in a way or another to qualify for these prestige classes, unless you want to shaft your character. Let say a class requires a rank of 7 in Perform, and knowledge of Dance and Drum. In the actual game, you will have 7 skill points put in perform, and you will know Dance, Drum, and five others. In PCGen, you will need to put more skills points, depending on how the requirements have been made, that can be as much as 21 skill points (Perform 7, Perform (Dance) 7, Perform (Drum) 7). I can't understand noone got the idea of re-using the Speak Language code... Each time I increase the rank in Speak Language, a pop-up windows appear asking me for a choice among the possible languages. Just make the same thing for Perform. You would have a list of perform types and instruments, and PrC prerequisites would consist in a single Skill rank requirement in Perform, and knowledge of the adequate Perform "languages".

I don't think it's that hard to do, since the mechanics is already there.

Oh, and I won't register on a yahoo groups, I got enough automatic spam from yahoo without having to give them my email adress again. In fact, I had to put a spam-filter to delete every mails from a yahoo.com domain, so if I register on this group I would not even receive the confirmation/activation/password mail.

I have a yahoo account that is tied to pcgen that i have used for almost a year. I have set my yahoogroups preference to NO EMAIL so I only check it like a BBS. I get a few spams from yahoo such as once a week but it's easy enough to delete. Other than that it's very easy to use for me when you don't have 100+ emails per day to go through..
