I am new here.

I am not exactly a gamer, I am a Chess Pro. Does that mean we are in the different camps, or not really? Can you help?

I have my project on Kickstarter that I'd like to get your feedback (and possible backing) on - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/249675593/chess-for-parents-helping-kids-to-develop-critical

There are some things I obviously don't get - certain games receive HUGE support and crazy amount of backers:

Well, ENWorld is first and foremost a site about roleplaying games. You will probably get better feedback over at Board Game Geeks which focuses on board games; covering abstract games like Chess as well as more recent types of games (collecting card games, Euro-games, etc.). If you haven't already done, so, give it a look - and good luck for your kickstarter!

You're more than welcome to discuss any tabletop game here.

I'm no expert (I've run 4 Kickstarters, plus one failed Kickstarter) but Monte Cook write an excellent little book on how to run a successful Kickstarter. It goes into how to construct your reward tiers and stretch goals, market your product, how often to post updates, types of backers, where your magic popular tier is and how to keep increasing its value based on stretch goals so your existing backers help with your marketing because it benefits them,

The take-home message is that your KS should be meticulously planned from the start, and it should be a full time job for the month it runs. Every day you should be promoting, working on new rewards, all kinds of stuff. You don't let up until the project is over.

Plus, of course, you have to have an idea that appeals.
