D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Dark of the Moon ⭐ This adventure is set in Vorostokov, yet another domain the 5e VRGtR seems to have forgotten about. It’s got a Russian feel to it, and at 300 miles across, mostly arctic-like conditions, and a grand total population of, like, 1,000 people not a terribly interesting place...

Well, you could just easily require Greater Restoration instead. That might at least make it more difficult.

One thing I was just looking at had a novel solution - they reserved the full powers for anything under 7th level (not sure why that level exactly). I'd want to avoid having to deal with the PC infecting other things, and having to roll those saves and yes - it does create a pandemic of...

I just downloaded a product from Sean K. Reynolds on DriveThruRPG and that's basically what he has - a cursed Rage feature that only ends with a spell like calm emotions otherwise it just continues to rage until the full moon ends (or maybe until combat is over). During which they attack friend...

Completely agree - there doesn't seem to be a happy middle ground here. Either you get some bonuses to your character, and absolutely no downsides whatsoever, or you basically lose your character. I'm going to have to think on this some more. Maybe there's a middle option here somewhere....

I want to have a conversation about lycanthropy. In my last game, I had a werewolf (and a troll) that were attacking some caravans of peasants. The werewolf was something I wanted to explore further, but it never really came to fruition. But at the time, one of my players was like "OMG, I want...

D&D General When did you leave D&D? Why? For what game? And what brought you back?

I took a large hiatus (real life) from gaming after 4e came out. I never made the switch to PF, though liked what I had seen of it. When I started my in-person game back up I briefly debated whether I wanted to use PF or 5e rules, and I opted for 5e because it just had far fewer books. I...

Pathfinder 2E I'm making a Pathfinder 1e and 2e setting inspired by Ancient India

Can I play an 8-armed elephant-headed dude who shoots enough arrows to block out the sun? :)

Someone graciously gave a copy of the tracks to A Light in the Belfry. So, without further ado... A Light in the Belfry ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ This module, for levels 6-8, comes with a CD. There were a handful of products of this nature published by TSR in the mid-90s after CDs became all the rage. This...

I agree that the druids and the sea monster could have used a bit more oomph in terms of story and involvement. Which is why I think I'll be leaning into the druids quite a bit more when I get to it in my campaign. Aggie could really use a lair, too. Fighting it in open water seems clumsy and...

lol - well, I use milestone-based leveling, but certainly awarding inspiration for "bravery" wouldn't be out of the question. Still, before I run Castles Forlorn, I'll need to figure out an actual plausible reason for the PCs to go journey into that place. I'm wondering if there are any good...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

I think it's funny how so many of the 2e modules' domains are listed in the "Other Domains" section. Like, SO many of them just get an honorable mention there.

I know there was a request to review Ship of Horror, and Gryphon Hill. Ship of Horror seemed rather uninteresting to me at a quick glance. But I think I've gotten through all the stuff I kind of wanted to get through. I might take another harder look at Circle of Darkness. I was going to look at...

Castles Forlorn ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Castles Forlorn is a boxed set. There’s a 96-page book, and two 32-page books. The crux of this module details a castle to explore. But rather than plop the PCs into the castle, it offers up some smaller quests to help provide some clues and tools regarding the...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

My theory is that TSR hired a bunch of creative writing graduates to write these modules, and so they end up reading like stories, and less like what we'd expect from a module where the PCs have actual free will.

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Oh man, I've seen that in a couple of places in these modules - someone is dying, and the text says "nothing the PCs do will save them" - like, seriously? You really expect me to buy that? It's so ham-fisted and dumb. I hate it. I'm going through Castles Forlorn at the moment. Gonna take me a...

In the module, it describes it as damaging his larynx, but otherwise doesn't kill him. But he now has a "ghost-like" voice as a result, which adds to the mystique, I suppose.

Invisible Stalker (Dungeon #63) ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ This blink-and-you’ll-miss-it module from Dungeon #63 is a “side trek” module that clocks in at just over two pages long and is intended for a party of 1st-2nd level. The premise is simple – a seamstress was recently the victim of an assault by a man...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Also, can we talk about how heavy-handed these modules are with werewolves? I mentioned this in my review of Feast of Goblyns. To me, werewolves are a bit like dragons. These aren't mindless killing machines. Well, ok, a werewolf kind of is a mindless killing machine, but the body it inhabits...

D&D General The thread where I review a ton of Ravenloft modules

Well, I'm certainly not paying $20 for that, but it sounds a little different. Mine is a little more .. mundane, I guess? I'm planning on them interacting with all the other patients and trying to find a way to escape. Nothing externally weird going on...
