I think it has an effect because most DMs are willing to accept the PHB races by default. People will exclude races from all kinds of other books but rarely do they exclude the core races. So I think you automatically see an uptick as a result.

If I’m being honest, I want them to go back over the last several DMGs, consider what they’ve already done multiple times and please, for the love of god, just do something different for once, and NOT turn half the book into an essay.

They do a fantastic job of emulating Gygaxian D&D, particularly DCC. Their maps and artwork are chef’s kiss

2e Ravenloft had a VERY high rapey old man quotient (amongst other issues) that needed to be dialed back.

They’re referring to the creation of Greyhawk as a product, not the setting itself. It never occurred to Gygax that someone would want to actually buy a setting product; he figured everyone would create their own.

Gary’s tenure was great for producing the classic adventures, and core rulebooks. 2e gave us great settings that fueled imaginations up through today.

That is actually not a bad idea! I mean, 2nd edition was rewarding XP for monster killing, and optionally treasure and both of those are less in keeping with Ravenloft than being the person who walks into a dark basement saying “Who goes there?”

Fair enough, you get a direction sign for a lot of the locations pointing you towards where to go with it. My point is that if I’m a DM who doesn’t want to come up with a setting all by myself, but I just need a start, not fully detailed the way FR is, Greyhawk is a good starting place.

Would absolutely love to see a book about Greyhawk that approaches that someday.

Oh, I can tell you why it still survives to this day - it was Gary Gygax’s. That mystique alone assured people would be enamored with it. Do I think it’s worthless? I think it’s under-developed. It’s got a great map. It’s got a lot of places with silly names. It’s got a lot of very famous NPCs...

So you’re saying you have to drop a lore bomb or we have to read a book to explain the difference between FR and GH? I’m pretty sure I can describe the differences between FR, Ravenloft, Spelljammer, Planescape and others fairly easily. Maybe there’s a reason there’s a struggle for Greyhawk?

Unfortunately, the history of Greyhawk and its ties to Gary Gygax meant that it was replaced by Forgotten Realms. They both share the same space because the inclusion of FR was to remove Gygax’s influence from the company down to the very setting he used. TBH, I’m not sure that Gygax wasnt...

I really liked this guy but never got to use him. I pictured him as still a darklord but instead of a domain, the entire river system of Ravenloft’s core was his domain.

So Nathan Timothy used to be a darklord of Arkendale which was retconned out in an new edition of the setting and for some reason, I always had it in my head that his boat was like a Mississippi River paddleboat. I don’t know if that was ever canon, but I base it completely off a picture of him...
