Took the first rank of the Local Leader perk so I could set up supply lines. I'm not sure I fully understand how they work. I've connected most of the other settlements to Sanctuary now, but am I supposed to connect the others to each other as well?

Also, how am I supposed to sell my extra produce and stuff when the traders all run of out caps? Do they not ever replenish their stashes of caps off-screen? Do I have to find more traders in order to sell stuff?

Also, those mirelurks (specifically the legendary glowing one and the queen) at the Castle were hella hard! Even though I'm level 20 now!

Traders stock refresh every two days.

Settlements just need to be connected. I do a local hub eg starlight then connect it to greygarden then overland. Next hub is hangman alley. Nearby settlements connect to the hub.

Use Hamgmans alley as a dept. Do t build much there or settle it. Best location in the game.

Mirelurk Queen is kinda easy at 7 your not playing survival? Landmines, Rockets, med X. Enemies level with you though.

Also used this guy. His videos are fun and very good.

Vault 88 Militia at your service.

Main benefit of merchants is resources. Main downside is RL time.

If you get really into the settlements, you may want to try Sim Settlements 2. It's a relatively easy mod to set up, only dependent upon two other small mods, and it not only includes a completely new way to manage settlements, but also its own extensive, fully-voiced storyline.

But do they get more caps as well? I just want to be able to sell my excess food, for instance, which I can't do if none of the traders I've found have any money on them.

OK, so as long as all my settlements are connected to a hub (in my case, Sanctuary), then I can access my full stash from any of them? And if I, say, deposit some junk at the Castle, I can then access it at Starlight because they're both connected to Sanctuary? I don't have to have a direct connection between the Castle and Starlight?

I don't think I've discovered Hangman's Alley yet. What makes it the best location?

I was having trouble even with rockets, and the number of stupid little hatchlings she kept sending at me made it difficult to do anything like set land mines. And I couldn't stay in one place for any length of time because I'd either get swarmed with hatchlings or spat on with acid. I'm ashamed to say I ended up turning on god mode to deal with both the queen and the legendary glowing guy.

I've picked up on the Vault 88 signal but haven't gone there yet.

OK. I'm actually starting to feel a little overwhelmed by the settlements.

Refresh includes caps. All merchants of terms sane type at same location.

Hangmans alley advantage is its location. Basically it's central to everything and event later in story. Sanctuary gets less relevant later as it's on the edge of the map.

Junk can't teleport between settlements. If they're linked even indirectly you can access it to build stuff.

The easiest way to do moding for a total newb is via the game's mod menu. That way all you have to do is find a mod you want or looks interesting and download it.

Beyond that it can get complicated pretty fast.
OK. So far I haven't found a Dogmeant + Human Companion mod in the game's mod section itself, but I'll look again.

OK cool. Thanks.

Fair enough! Yes, now that I've made it to the Castle on the coast, Sanctuary does feel rather far away ...

Got it! I can't put junk in one settlement and see it in the workshop in another, but I can use it to make stuff in any settlement regardless of which one I've put it in. That was the main thing I wanted to know.

Yep you can access the junk for other uses. Eg carrying it around to repair power armor in the field or set up new beacons.

I think you can fast travel though. I can't remember I'm Survival mode you have to travel the hard way and unlock sone faster options later.

Hence Hangman's Alley. Generally I build a bed, basic defenses and construction equipment.

To realy milk the money you want a different merchant vendor (armor, guns, var etc) and the level 4 merchants.

Games buggy though and getting everything working is hard.

so, here's a video on doing mods outside of the game's mod menu
However, you can skip the manual installing of F4SE just by letting vortex do it for you. Just by clicking Vortex instead of manual.

I see. Yeah, I'm just playing regular mode, so I can fast travel between places. It's just that Sanctuary is starting to feel far away.

Yeah, if you're not playing in Survival mode and have access to Fast Travel, it's really just an aesthetic choice as to where to make your home base (as long as you've taken Local Leader up to where you can build crafting benches). I'm partial to Starlight Drive-In and Egret Tours Marina.

I’m partial to Sanctuary simply because that was the main character’s pre-war home.
