D&D General D&D Red Box: Who Is The Warrior?

A WizKids miniature reveals the iconic character's face for the first time.

The Dungeons & Dragons Red Box, famously illustrated by Larry Elmore in 1983, featured cover art of a warrior fighting a red dragon. The piece is an iconic part of D&D's history.

WizKids is creating a 50th Anniversary D&D miniatures set for the D&D Icons of the Realms line which includes models based on classic art from the game, such as the AD&D Player's Handbook's famous 'A Paladin In Hell' piece by David Sutherland in 1978, along with various monsters and other iconic images. The set will be available in July 2024.

Amongst the collection is Elmore's dragon-fighting warrior. This character has only ever been seen from behind, and has never been named or identified. However, WizKids’ miniature gives us our first look at them from the front. The warrior is a woman; the view from behind is identical to the original art, while the view from the front--the first time the character's face has ever been seen--is, as WizKids told ComicBook.com, "purposefully and clearly" a woman. This will be one of 10 secret rare miniatures included in the D&D Icons of the Realms: 50th Anniversary booster boxes.

The original artist, Larry Elmore, says otherwise. (Update—the linked post has since been edited).

It's a man!

Gary didn't know what he wanted, all he wanted was something simple that would jump out at you. He wanted a male warrior. If it was a woman, you would know it for I'm pretty famous for painting women.

There was never a question in all these years about the male warrior.

No one thought it was a female warrior. "Whoever thought it was a female warrior is quite crazy and do not know what they are talking about."

This is stupid. I painted it, I should know.
- Larry Elmore

Whether or not Elmore's intent was for the character to be a man, it seems that officially she's a woman. Either way, it's an awesome miniature. And for those who love the art, you can buy a print from Larry Elmore's official website.

I don’t think he intends to be sexist, but particularly that last quote of his comes off not the best.
Not all people who say sexist things think they are saying sexist things. It doesn't have to be intentional.

I'm not saying he is sexist. But many sexists don't identify as sexists either. The world just has to look at how they say things, and how they handle being challenged when their commentary is questionable. Do they retract/clarify their opinion, or double down on it when challenged? That is the proof in the pudding.

Like I said, there are already plenty of female warrior minis. And they can make as many more as they can sell. There is no reason it has to be THIS one. It doesn't even have to be this one within the 50th anniversary line--as others have pointed out, there are plenty of female characters within the D&D lineup who could have been used.
That is Your opinion. I think I've made mine fairly clear. We have agreed to disagree so not sure why you keep having to make your point based on my reply.

Re-read my posts. Not sure what else there is to say. You've made your opinion clear to me.

I do wonder how many women feel that this is a victory for representation vs. non-women who think it is.

I’d tend to lean with whatever the consensus from women is (I know it’s impossible to get that data.)

If the consensus from women is “yes, we feel represented”, then great! I’m glad they made the mini a woman.

If the consensus from women is “no, not really. They just retconned a man to be woman and ignored the actual women warriors”, then it all becomes empty virtue for non-women.

Heh. When I look at the Red Box image, and am told the warrior is a woman, I cant unsee it.

The image does read as a woman. Regardless of the artists intent.

In this day and age, where about half the players are women, a serious adventurer who happens to be a woman is appreciated. That this is a classic image, even more so.
I have thought it was a women since ... I dunno 85? Frankly, it looks Snarfquest's Telerie Windyarm in armor...

Right. But she's pretty clearly a character visually designed for the male gaze. Sexualized. As are most of the other iconic female art pieces from yesteryear.

One thing you can say about the mini they produced is that she means business.
I don't have issues with some fantasy female or male gazes in game art. As well personally find a bit of "sexy" here and there fun in fantasy games, not over the top but mixed in here and there, it's fun. I enjoy Frazetta, Elmore and the rest, so for me a Telerie Windyarm mini mixing it up with my huge collection of minis would be a welcome add. I have female minis of all flavors that are awesome, some full on old school red sonja and others armored up to the max, they are all cool. The males as well, I got your Conan's to your Paladin in hell's, they are all welcome and used at our table. If the "female variant" of the red box warrior was just a stand alone mini with none of the baggage she'd be a cool add as well.

Always thought it was the same character on the Basic through Immortals boxset as well depicting the progression over the levels. I had all those boxsets and played them throughout the 80's. I've never encountered a single person in 40 years who thought the painting was of a female. Welcome to 2024, haha.

Don't really care as I don't like Wizkid minis and like the idea of random minis in a box even less.

According to the TSR guys it's meant to be the same guy as he levels up.
