D&D 1E How do you play an illusionist?

I played one, one of the things is that it relied a lot on a compliant DM. For instance, casting illusions of medusa that would convince enemies that they had turned to stone. You had to be creative, since many spells were open to interpretation

New changes are afoot for OSRIC!

My question is about the content from the Tome of Horrors (basically a lot of old monsters left out of the SRD), which is used extensively in the 2nd version of OSRIC. Was the ToH content released under the CC license? I know the ToH gets released fairly regularly but the last version I have is...

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

Can I just say this sounds like a paid advertisement? I don't trust reviews (or posts) where someone calls an author of an non-academic publication, "Dr". I think the person who said it was B/X with some AD&D bits and houserules was right. It's nothing special nor nothing that hasn't been done...

    Greatest Fantasy Warriors?

Karl Edward Wagner's Kane. He murdered his brother and led a rebellion against Wanger's version of Lovecraft's Elder Gods that created humanity, and was cursed to immortality (from aging, he can still die by violence) but also never able to become a ruler. Despite him trying literally 1000s of...

D&D General Industry Veteran Jennell Jaquays Passes

People mention Quake and later games, but before those she played a huge role in pretty much every game from Coleco for the ColecoVision. That was my #1 console as a kid and my life would have been very, very duller without her

The new OGL 1.2, What is Victory?

Yeah, I also publish OSR stuff and there is just a wealth of material for 3.x that doesn't deserve to be lost. And beyond that, there are systems released under 1.0a of the SRD that might not get released under a new license.

Is it time to revive the D20 License? (Or equivalent)

This does seem like the ideal solution except we've gotten so used to pushing content for use with D&D without having something like this that It worked earlier because WOTC built up d20 as a brand, equating it with D&D by having the logo on its D&D books. So there was value in using that due...

    Why not a CC license?

I'll be honest - I've found the CC licensing to be confusing, while the OGL is surprisingly clear. And there is six difference licenses and different versions of the license and different ways of attributing works you've cited https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons_license I mean, it's...

95% of you didn't need the OGL and you don't need ORC

The point of the OGL was not that you could reprint the rules and make your own game (that probably didn't happen for a couple year after it came out, even Troll Lord started with d20 stuff) The point was you could use material from D&D - monsters, spells, and what not without resorting to the...

    Hypothetical: I ignore OGL 1.x

I am thinking about doing this, as I have probably a dozen OSR projects that are anywhere from 10% to 95% done, and since I use a lot of converted content from Pathfinder and Tome of Horrors, 1.1 isn't even an option, really. The problem is, where do you distribute your work? DTRPG has like 90%...

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

People like to say this, but history shows something different with TSR and Mayfair, TSR and GDW. Neither Mayfair nor GDW lost the lawsuit, but both were effectively hobbled by the law suits, taking away time and money to release product and so both settled with TSR, ending further plans.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

The 1.0a OGL was used for other games besides D&D. The two notable ones are Mongoose Traveller 1.0 and WEG's D6 which spawned a decent amount of third party support (though nothing like Paizo or Kobold Press). Of course the problem is that they would have to release the SRDs for those systems...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Goodman already has a license from Hasbro for the various 5e updates of classic modules (Borderlands, Isle of Dread, etc). I think it's far more likely they will continue that sort of existing relationship than to suddenly become adversarial.

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

Honestly, I got the opposite impression, that they were okay with signing 1.1 or some sort of separate deal with Hasbro. (And unless I remember incorrectly, Mr. Goodman is a lawyer)

Ryan Dancey -- Hasbro Cannot Deauthorize OGL

TSR employed this strategy successfully in the 1990s, essentially squishing Mayfair's Role-Aids and Gary Gygax's Mythus from GDW (and before that a module EGG wanted to publish from his own company, New Infinities). It wasn't the expense of the fight, but that it tied up resources at the...
