A couple of things here
1. There is a book "Tales Before Tolkien: The Roots of Modern Fantasy. Tales That Inspired the Author of Lord of the Rings" edited by Douglas A. Anderson that is a good read. Also, the Annotated Hobbit is good.

You could drop hints through NPCs (an NPC they meet complains about having to bribe the Duergar). A dropped/found scroll contains instructions in dwarven for commanding the options (an instruction manual). Wall paintings illustrate a dwarf commanding the objects.
Its not sad at all. We've been going on 3 years with the same core books and only small mechanical expansions. Unlike say 2e, 3e, 4e, and Pathfinder which gave us new books all the time, this edition is about making our own way. Wanting to try new things and new settings with the 5e rules is...
Sounds like fun. As someone that has done this before, here are some things that came up:
1) Ranged attacks might become too prominent, so think about firing into combat rules and how effective you want ranged combat to be.
2) Alliance-building becomes far more important. Henchman and follower...
One thing you could do is have the environment damage all combatants equally-such as molten hot brass floors that do damage to everyone in range. Or a necrotic damage pulse that issues from an ancient sarcophagus until its covered (and the PCs are fighting ghouls). Or traps that randomly go off...
I usually set a time limit for a campaign-say 4 to 8 sessions and wrap everything up at the end. People tend to stick around until everything is finished because an end is in sight. Some people leave or return for later campaigns. Sort of the "train stop" method of campaign planning.
Stars Without Number and all the Sin Nomine stuff are excellent resources I flip through to plan other games I play.
Hidden Gem: Murphy's World by Kevin Davies has some good resources as well.
Some people just want to play different styles of the game. I played with feats last time, now I don't want to play with them this campaign. Maybe next campaign I want to add them back in.
