IIRC, someone on the D&D said about five years ago that half of all DMs homebrew their campaigns. I have no idea if that number would hold up today. But I believe WOTC periodically asks about published campaigns vs. homebrew when it puts out surveys, so they likely have a very rough estimate.

PC is carrying a magic item, but literally never encounters a situation where the item would be useful? That absolutely checks out. I’m remembering a campaign where I got a Rod of Lordly Might at like Level 5… then never had a use for it.

I used to think this, too… then I had to actually pack up everything I own to move out of state.
