D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

Horwath

Legend
And honestly? The sorcerer's Aberrant Mind subclass with the Spell Points system in the DMG will get you 90% of the way there.
aberrant mind make Sorcerer worth playing in 5E.
everything else is poor mans wizard.

add subtle spell metamagic, Strixhaven background that gives healing spells and Telekinetic feat and I have found my best vision of mage class in D&D.

My ideal.

Psion replaces Sorcerer.

Sorcerer becomes a Psion subclass.

Sorcerer handles all of elemental Evocation and Transmutation.

The Psion has force magic, such as Telekinesis and Mage Hand, Magic Missile, Wall of Force, etcetera, which become the Dunomancy school.

However, the Psion normally lacks elemental magic except for the Sorcerer option.

Warlock gains a Dragon Pact.
to merge ideas rarely works without doing so at the beginning and we are not at the beginning at all.
also even a short glance at wikipeida lists way more options than pure force

I have no idea what to do with sorceror thematically or mechanically past it should be the simple and easy-to-use caster as that is a niche we are not presently possessing all that well

That's literally killing the sorcerer and giving its toys to the wizard.
Not at all. "Sorcerer" is nothing more than an arcane caster whose magic comes from within instead of studying, etc.

What identified a sorcerer is metamagic, which this subclass has and is the only one with it. Wizards don't get it, just this subclass. Any other wizard is stuff without it, especially since we don't use the Metamagic feat.

I am not arguing sorcerer should be a wizard subclass.
Sorry, I was simply agreeing with the idea that metamagic is more wizardly, so it makes sense to make sorcerer a wizard who can manipulate magic, while other wizards can't. Sorcerer really has no other identity outside of metamagic and devoting an entire class to that is weak IMO.

That would be nice and give it more definition, but once it has metamagic, it isn't quite as "simple and easy-to-use" IME. Watching players trying to pick a very limited selection of metamagic and then stress over limited sorcery points sort of goes against that.

The most popular Sorcerer subclass is Draconic. The Warlock can easily make a Dragon Pact, or descend from an ancestor who made a Dragon Pact.

The second popular Sorcerer subclass is Divine. There is already a Celestial Pact.
Yep. They both have very similar "gain magic from a powerful creature via pact/ancestry." I don't see a reason to have duplicate classes for demon pact/blood, dragon pact/blood etc.
